Report: Manchester United stand good chance of signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic if they appoint Jose Mourinho

Mourinho has long been linked with the United hotseat, and Ibrahimovic is available in the summer.

Manchester United stand a very good chance of signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic if Jose Mourinho becomes their new manager, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

Ibrahimovic has made it well known that he is on the lookout for a new club when his contract at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain expires in the summer.

It seems that the Sweden international is open to a move to Old Trafford, and would like to link up with the club if Mourinho replaces Louis van Gaal in the managerial hotseat - which has been the subject of much speculation since the midway point of the season.

It means that Ibrahimovic could be prepared to sacrifice Champions League football with a move to the Premier League, as United currently sit in sixth place, but are firmly in the race to qualify for next season's competition as they trail neighbours Manchester City by just a point, but one avenue to next season's competition was closed off after they were knocked out of the Europa League by Liverpool earlier on in the month.

Signing Ibrahimovic would be a statement from United if nothing else. At the age of 34, it's safe to say his best years are behind him but he has so much to offer a side in terms of intelligence and instinct in the final third, as well as experience, but shows that the club are still attracting the bigger names even if they haven't mounted a challenge for the Premier League title for the third successive season.

It will be interesting to see how it all develops, and one wonders just how much it will hinge on former Chelsea boss Mourinho being handed the reins at Old Trafford.
