Although the Three Lions fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Wembley yesterday, Owen still felt that Drinkwater could feel proud of his performance.
The ex-Manchester United trainee was playing for England for the first time and he did not look at all overawed by the occasion.
"Good debut from Drinkwater," Owen wrote. "Loving the round the corner balls into the front man's feet. Football brain."
Drinkwater was named the sponsor’s man of the match at Wembley, and his performance has done his chances of going to EURO 2016 no harm.
The 26-year-old was stationed in a defensive midfield role, and he put in a disciplined display.
Drinkwater provided England’s defence with good protection, and he also showed off his passing range.
The central midfielder could not stop England falling to defeat, however, with Holland coming from behind to pick up the victory.
Jamie Vardy had fired the Three Lions in front, but goals from Vincent Janssen and Luciano Narsingh ensured that Danny Blind’s side were able to celebrate victory.
