Key Newcastle United star Rob Elliott injured on international duty, substituted after just 14 minutes

Newcastle's Rob Elliott has been injured for Ireland.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliott has suffered an injury playing for Republic of Ireland.

Elliott had started the international friendly game against Slovakia, but lasted just 14 minutes.

He was stretchered off after conceding a goal to Miroslav Stoch, appearing to sustain a knee injury.

The injury is a big potential blow to Newcastle's survival hopes, with a huge Premier League game to play away to Norwich City this weekend.

Elliott is Newcastle's stand-in goalkeeper at present, filling in for Dutchman Tim Krul who suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty earlier in the season.

This will leave Newcastle relying on former Nottingham Forest stopper Karl Darlow, who did not cover himself in glory when called upon earlier in the season.

It would also be a cruel blow for Elliott personally if he were to now miss out on Euro 2016 with the Republic of Ireland, and both he and Newcastle fans will be anxiously waiting on updates regarding his fitness.
