Tottenham first-team star ruled out of international friendly

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld will not play for Belgium against Portugal on Tuesday evening.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been ruled out of Belgium’s international friendly match against Portugal on Tuesday evening.

According to the official Twitter page of the Belgium national team, the 27-year-old is ill and will not travel to Portugal with the squad.

This means that Alderweireld will likely return to Tottenham, and hopefully for the North London club’s fans, he will recover soon.

The Belgian is one of Spurs’ best players and has been arguably the best defender in the Premier League this season.

The 27-year-old centre-back has scored three goals and created eight chances in 31 league matches for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Alderweireld has a pass accuracy of 80% and a shot accuracy of 46%, and has won 48 headers, five dribbles and 25 tackles.

Tottenham are in the hunt for the Premier League title this season, and the former Ajax star needs to be fully fit.

The North London outfit will return to action on Saturday evening when they take on Liverpool away from home at Anfield in the Premier League.
