Jordon Ibe has been warned by Gareth Southgate that he may not regain his place in England's under-21 side after he was sent off.
Ibe was dismissed in the final minute of the 1-1 draw with Switzerland, and will miss a qualifying match for the European Championships in September against Norway through suspension.
Southgate is confident England have quality alternatives and the 20-year-old could regret his dismissal.
He told The Mail: "We have got Nathan Redmond to come back from injury. Demarai Gray played really well in Switzerland. Duncan Watmore has got to come back. So there is the competition for places. A sending off puts you out of the side. That is the difficulty."
He went on to compare Ibe's situation to Andre Wisdom, who never played for the under-21 team again after being sent off against Bosnia in 2013.
While circumstances in each case are different, the form and rise to prominence of players like Nathan Redmond will keep Ibe guessing, and potentially leave him on the outside looking in, and reflecting on a disappointing season so far for club and country.
Ibe has played 21 league games for Liverpool this season but is yet to score, and has provided only one assist.
