Leeds United midfielder Lewis Cook could be the best signing Everton make this summer

Lewis Cook would be an outstanding addition for Everton if they can prise him from Leeds United.

The Sun reported last week how Leeds United midfielder Lewis Cook has emerged as a top transfer target for Everton.

The Toffees have just received a cash boost from Iranian investor Farhad Moshiri, and while fans may be looking at more expensive and bigger name additions, the Championship midfielder could be the best signing Everton make all summer.

Cook, 19, has been a regular at Leeds for the past two seasons, and a shining star amid his mediocre teammates.

There is little doubt his competitiveness and technical ability would see him step up with ease to the Premier League, potentially emulating Dele Alli's jump from MK Dons to Tottenham.

Cook played alongside Alli at England youth level, and featured for England's under-19 side at the weekend, and Everton would be buying a certain future Three Lions senior international player.

The club are in need of fresh talent in midfield, with Gareth Barry 35-years-old, and Steven Pienaar set to be released at the end of the season.

Everton have been willing to invest in lower league talent over the past few seasons, snapping up John Stones and Mason Holgate, and attempted to sign Sam Byram from Leeds in January, successful in negotiations before the player elected to join West Ham instead.

The most exciting aspect for Everton regarding Cook is the balance he would provide alongside Ross Barkley in midfield. The duo could forge a strong partnership for club and country, leaving Everton with two cornerstones of their future success in place for the next decade.

Cook's contract at Leeds runs out in June 2017, and unless they can sign him to a new deal soon, Everton's recent investment leaves them well placed to snap him up. It's unlikely they would regret it if they did.
