We continue our countdown of the greatest players in Aston Villa's history with a striker who sits second on the club's all-time scoring list.
4. Harry Hampton
Born: Wellington, Shropshire, 21 April 1885
Aston Villa career: 1904-1920
Appearances: 376 Goals: 242
Aston Villa’s all-time leading scorer in league football, Hampton established himself as one of the most deadly marksmen in England during his time with the claret and blues.
The hard-working forward joined Villa from his local club Wellington Town in April 1904 for a £120 transfer fee and proceeded to help them win the FA Cup in his debut campaign, scoring both goals in the final against Newcastle United.
He netted 22 times in all competitions that term and went on to hit double figures in all but one of the next 10 seasons as well, leading the Midlands outfit to the 1909-10 League Championship title and another FA Cup triumph in 1913 in the process.
The Shropshire native also earned four England caps between 1913 and 1914, scoring twice, but the subsequent outbreak of World War I meant he was unable to leave a bigger mark on the international stage.
He resumed his Villa career with the return of the Football League in 1919 after serving on the Somme, but the effects of mustard gas poisoning meant he was never the same player.
After featuring just seven times for the club that season, he left to join local rivals Birmingham City in 1920 for a two-year spell before seeing out his career with short stints at Newport County and Wellington again.
He averaged a goal just under every 140 minutes during his time at Villa and hit a club-record 14 hat-tricks, including a five-goal haul against Sheffield Wednesday in 1912, but he would have surely added more to his record were it not for the war.
He died in March 1963 at the age of 77.
