Report: Watford's Gomes among five names linked as Everton’s Tim Howard replacement

Everton Goodison

Everton have been linked with five goalkeepers, including Watford’s Heurelho Gomes.

According to Superdeporte, Everton have identified five possible Tim Howard replacements.

The Spanish publication claim Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, Chelsea’s Asmir Begovic, Atalanta’s Marco Sportiello, Marseille’s Steve Mandanda and Valencia’s Jaume Domenech are those considered.

Howard, 37 has been with the Toffees for more than eight years following his move from Manchester United in 2007, establishing himself as the club’s long-term number one.

The American international has made more than 350 Premier League appearances while at Goodison Park, yet his time on Merseyside is coming to an end with a move to Colorado Rapids set for this summer.

Everton have a tough job in replacing him, and alongside back-up goalkeeper Joel Robles, the club will need to go out and bring in an experienced number one to fight for the shirt this summer.

A number of custodians are reportedly in contention, with Watford’s Gomes a surprise option considering the 35-year-old is very much in the twilight of his career.

Begovic has struggled for games at Chelsea following the return of Thibaut Courtois from injury, and the former Stoke City man would represent a fine option as he is both experienced and talented.

But Roberto Martinez may wish to explore the foreign market, and aided by the financial backing of new majority stakeholder Farhad Moshiri, the could spend big on a top number one.

Sportiello, 23, is a wonderful option with the Italian linked away from Atalanta and destined for a big future, something Everton may be looking for this summer.
