HITC Sport's countdown of the Owls' greatest ever players continues with Tommy Crawshaw.
Thomas 'Tommy' Crawshaw holds the honour of being the first Sheffield Wednesday captain to lift the First Division title.
Signed from Greater Manchester side Heywood Central in 1894 following a tour of youth teams in the Sheffield area, the centre-back settled immediately at Wednesday - who were then known as The Wednesday - missing just two matches of his debut campaign and winning his first cap for England that year.
In 1896, Crawshaw helped the Owls - whose nickname was then the Blades - to a seventh-placed finish, one higher than in the previous season, but somewhat more notably, the club's first ever FA Cup.
Though it was his error that had gifted Wolverhampton Wanderers their goal in the Crystal Palace final, Fred Spiksley, who'd opened the scoring with less than a minute played, soon restored Wednesday's lead and the match finishing 2-1 to the Yorkshiremen.
The Owls suffered relegation in 1899 but returned at the first attempt in what was their first season at Hillsborough, with Crawshaw - known for his tackling and heading despite standing just under six foot - playing an integral role in their ascent.
Three years later, he was captaining them to the First Division title, and repeated the trick the following year - 1903-04.
Another cup win followed for Wednesday and Crawshaw in 1907, with Everton the victims on this occasion - again at Crystal Palace. But it would prove to be the then 34-year-old's final full season at Hillsborough, although he signed off in style the following campaign, courtesy of a 2-0 win against Sheffield United in the Steel City derby.
