Shay Given, Jack Grealish and others react to Jack Butland's injury news

The Stoke City goalkeeper is almost certain to miss Euro 2016 after fracturing his ankle whilst playing for England against Germany.

Jack Butland's worst fears were confirmed on Sunday night when it was revealed that the young England goalkeeper fractured his ankle in the international friendly against Germany.

Butland initially attempted to play on after appearing to pick up an issue late in the first half of the match in Berlin on Saturday night, but after he was beaten from distance by Toni Kroos moments later, he was replaced by Fraser Forster on the stroke of half-time.

There was speculation after that match that the Stoke City stopper may have done something serious, and that was confirmed 24 hours later when the 23-year-old tweeted to reveal the extent of his injury.

Butland wrote: "Today's scan revealed I've fractured my ankle, absolutely devasted (sic)! I'll be doing everything I can to get back fit as soon as I can!"

There was unsurprisingly a huge amount of sympathy from fans on Twitter for the man who was making only his fourth senior England cap when he picked up the season-ending injury.

Butland's teammates, other footballers, and ex-pros alike have also sent messages to the player after his dream of playing for his country at a major tournament was put on hold for at least another two years.

His back-up goalkeeper at the Britannia Stadium, Shay Given, and former Birmingham City teammate Colin Doyle sent their support, with veteran pro Given urging the current number one to stay positive.

Meanwhile, England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence and Butland's former Stoke teammate Thomas Sorensen insisted that the promising talent would return stronger despite the heartbreak of missing out on Euro 2016.

Aston Villa youngster Jack Grealish, who knows Butland from his days playing at cross-city rivals Birmingham City added his voice to Clemence's focus on the future.

Meanwhile, Derby County star Will Hughes and Grealish's Villa teammate and on-loan Nottingham Forest midfielder Gary Gardner also sent their support, with both players having played alongside Butland for England's Under-21s side.
