Ireland fans react on Twitter to Ciaran Clark's brilliant performance against Switzerland

The Republic of Ireland beat Switzerland 1-0 on Friday night.

The Republic of Ireland began warming up for this summer's European Championships in France by beating Switzerland 1-0 on Friday evening.

Martin O'Neill's men came through a play-off tie with Bosnia to reach the Euro 2016 finals this summer, and laid down something of a marker by beating a strong Switzerland side at the Aviva Stadium.

The only goal of the game arrived inside first two minutes, as Ciaran Clark headed home from close range to put Ireland in front from a Robbie Brady corner.

1-0 is how it stayed, as Ireland's defence stood strong, with centre backs Clark and Shane Duffy impressing in front of West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

During and after the game, Ireland fans took to Twitter to react to Clark's performance, having not only scored the winning goal but also played a huge part in keeping a clean sheet.

Fans suggested that - even with Clark's Aston Villa struggling at the foot of the Premier League table - 26-year-old Clark deserves a move back to the top flight when Villa are relegated, and supporters also couldn't believe that he isn't a regular under Remi Garde.

Fans also claimed that the 'brilliant' Clark and Duffy impressed so much that they should be first choice for Ireland at Euro 2016, urging O'Neill to pick the pair over Richard Keogh and John O'Shea.
