Former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Graeme Souness has listed his top six players in the Premier League this season in The Sunday Times.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, Leicester City trio Jamie Vardy, Danny Drinkwater and Riyad Mahrez, West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea make the list.
Souness has also highlighted a couple of similarities between Leicester winger Mahrez and West Ham attacker Payet.
“My third Leicester player is Riyad Mahrez,” the former Scotland international wrote in The Sunday Times. “Like West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, who is also on my shortlist, he has somehow escaped the big guys.
“All these leading clubs are meant to have super scouting systems, but these two have slipped through the net and could now help Leicester and West Ham reach the Champions League at their expense.”
“Mahrez has wonderful technique, too,” added Souness. “Like Payet, he gets you on the edge of your seat when he is on the ball.”
It is hard to disagree with Souness regarding his picks, although some may suggest that Leicester midfielder N’Golo Kante should be in the list ahead of possibly Drinkwater.
It is interesting that Souness has picked De Gea, as it is easy to forget his saves amid disappointing times for United.
Louis van Gaal’s side are having a bad season, but the Spain international goalkeeper has been at his best like always.
The former Atletico Madrid star has kept 11 clean sheets in 26 Premier League matches for United so far this season, keeping 2.38 saves per game and 2.58 saves per goal on average in the process.
