Rafa Benitez responds to latest Newcastle injury blow

Newcastle Utd - Gate

Newcastle United’s Massadio Haidara picked up an injury in training.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez says he does not know how long Massadio Haidara will be out for after the defender twisted his knee in training, the Chronicle reports.

With Paul Dummett still troubled by a hamstring injury and Jack Colback suspended for two matches after picking up ten yellow cards, Newcastle’s options at left-back are looking rather thin.

Haidara was expected to be involved for the crunch tie against Norwich City in ten days time, yet Benitez now suggests he is a major doubt for the trip to Carrow Road.

“We don’t know yet (how long he’ll be out for) but he twisted his knee. I think he’ll have a problem. Now we have to manage the problem that we have,” Benitez explained.

“Colback can’t play but we will see what the doctor says about Haidara. If we have problems you have to find solutions.”

Haidara, 23, has not featured all too often for Newcastle this season, starting only six Premier League matches with his last appearance incidentally coming against Norwich in the 6-2 win back in October.

But with Dummett and Colback unavailable, he is arguably the only natural left-back the Magpies have left in their senior squad and his latest injury is yet another unwanted problem.

The trip to Norwich represents Newcastle’s biggest game of the season, and defeat there could leave Benitez’s side in a whole heap of trouble as they currently sit three points behind the Canaries with time running out.
