Ray Wilkins has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT, which was broadcast on 24th March, that he has no idea why Roberto Martinez has not been starting John Stones for Everton.
Stones has dropped out of favour at Goodison Park recently, and he has been forced to sit on the substitutes’ bench.
Wilkins cannot work out why the youngster is struggling to get a starting place, as he feels that he is a magnificent talent.
“John has unfortunately not been featuring much of late, and I don’t know why he’s not been playing,” Wilkins said. “I’ve got no idea [why he’s not starting] as he’s a very talented young footballer.”
Stones was a revelation during his first season at Everton last year, but his form has not been as spectacular this time around.
The England international has looked slightly error prone, and the arrival of Ramiro Funes Mori last summer has increased competition for places at the Merseyside club.
At the moment Funes Mori and Phil Jagielka appear to be Martinez’s first choice pairing in the heart of defence.
Stones was brought on at half-time in Everton’s last match against Arsenal, though, and Martinez praised the 21-year-old’s performance after the fixture.
“I think he has come back with a real focus and a real intent of performing well and I think the second half performance, the back three had to do everything, defend, get on the ball and try to play forward and I thought it was an all-action performance," the Spanish boss said to the Daily Mirror.
“He reacted well and anticipated things very well. He played really well, and he’s refreshed.”
Everton’s next match comes against Manchester United after the international break.
