Roberts scored Newcastle’s equaliser against Brighton in a 1-1 draw, with a well placed finish in the second half.
The winger has been short of his best in recent weeks, but Beardsley says that he was pleased with the 18-year-old’s willingness to take on his advice.
"It was back to what we expect, without putting pressure on him. He played well all night and scored a great goal," he said.
"It was good passing and movement, and when he cut back you're probably thinking on the bench that he should've shot early. We've been talking to him recently about having a bit more composure rather than blasting the ball when he doesn't need to and, to be fair, he took it really well.”
Newcastle’s side for the match against Brighton featured a number of players who had been called up from the under-18’s.
Roberts was, therefore, one of the most senior players in the team and he stepped up with the added responsibility.
Roberts also spent time out on loan with Gateshead last season, where he made three appearances.
The task for Roberts will now be to ensure that he continues to push and stakes a claim for a first-team place.
The skilful winger is highly regarded by Newcastle’s coaching staff, and he made one senior appearance for the Tynesiders in the FA Cup last season.
