The Sky Sports pundit is backing West Ham United or Manchester United to pip City to Champions League football.
Manchester City’s title hopes have long been extinguished but now the club are struggling to secure a place in next seasons Champions League.
They lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United this weekend gone and that has seen the gap between the two clubs close to just one point. West Ham act as a Manchester sandwich filling in fifth position and both the Hammers and Manchester United will both fancy their chances of taking fourth spot.
One man who thinks that is exactly what will happen is Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson.
“I don’t see them getting in the top four. I don’t see them getting in the top four Man City.
“I really don’t, I think it is out of West Ham and Man United, I don’t see them getting in there on that slippery slope.
“I think there’s a lot of players that have looked at the Champions League and gone right this is for us. A few players at Man City probably thought ‘I’m not going to be here next year’ and I think they shouldn’t be where they are.
“I worry for them. I think Pep Guardiola will come in and he won’t be in Champions League football.”
That is quite a brave prediction but looking at their current situation it is understandable.
The club have recently lost Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling to injury and since it was announced that Bayern Munich boss Guardiola was taking over in the summer results have dipped dramatically.
They also have the added distraction of the Champions League and it is easy to see why Merson has decided City will not be playing Champions League football next season.
Which will surely not have been in Guardiola’s plans.
