The Belgian midfielder is set to leave the Russian club this summer.
The Belgian has insisted he wants to leave Zenit Saint Petersburg this summer in order to move to a bigger European league.
He is quoted as telling La Derniere Heurre:
“I still have a contract for one more year come June and the club know how I feel. I would like to play in a bigger league.
“I cannot say that I will 100 per cent leave, but we have not held talks over a new deal and my intention is to leave this summer. I want to focus on finishing the season on a high, then there's the Euros and then we will see what happens."
So should Everton look at making a marquee signing?
Everton have fresh investment from Farhad Moshiri and Witsel is exactly the type of big name signing the club would love to make.
The Belgian is an athletic but powerful midfielder who defines box-to-box ability and is also a good friend of current Everton star Romelu Lukaku.
He has the necessary poise of Gareth Barry, the movement of James McCarthy and the aggression of Mo Besic – he is the perfect embodiment of Everton’s current deep midfield trio.
Barry is no spring chicken whilst Besic has struggled with injury and consistency. Even the ever reliable James McCarthy has been off colour recently and Witsel would not only be a brilliant replacement for Barry at Everton but would also take the pressure off the Irishman.
If they have the cash available, then Everton should certainly make a move for the player.
