Report: Watford linked with Josip Ilicic, who Nicola Salerno admitted links with

Watford Vicarage Road 2

The Slovenian was heavily linked with a move to Leeds in 2014.

Watford are believed to be on the hunt for Slovenian international Josip Ilicic.

It is being reported by Tutto Mercato Web that Watford will be looking to sign the Slovenian in the summer. Ilicic has scored 13 goals in 36 appearances this season after finally settling in Florence.

The report claims that Watford have been keeping tabs on the player and that they are now ready to snap up the player from Fiorentina.

Of course this might see former Leeds United sporting director Nicola Salerno come into play.

Salerno acts as a consultant at Watford, specifically regarding the recruitment of overseas players.

Plus, this is not the first time Salerno has been linked with signing Ilicic.

Leeds United were heavily linked with an interest in the player when Salerno was at Elland Road – with his Slovenian compatriot Darko Milanic then the head coach at Leeds.

It looked a farfetched deal and it never happened. But Salerno told CalcioNews24 in December 2014 that despite Leeds ruling themselves out of the running, he was in a position to get in contact with the impressive playmaker:

"I am a close friend of the agent of Ilicic, I have relationships with Fiorentina and I know the guy. Currently, however, the player is not in our reach, he has higher ambitions: to play for Fiorentina in the Europa League and at this time we can't tempt him."

Watford will be hoping that they can succeed where Leeds failed and convince the Slovenian to head to England this summer.
