Ray Parlour has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on TalkSPORT, which was broadcast on 23rd March, that West Ham United’s gamble to sign Michail Antonio has paid off.
West Ham bought in Antonio from Nottingham Forest last summer, and the powerful winger has enjoyed a wonderful first campaign at Upton Park.
The 25-year-old has broken into Slaven Bilic’s team to play a key role, and Parlour believes that Antonio now stands a chance of making it into future England squads.
“He’s done well,” Parlour said. “It was a gamble, there’s no doubt.
“People are talking about him for England, and maybe it’s a bit too late for the Euro’s but it’s possible he could go to the World Cup in two years time. He’s improved a lot. West Ham have got a very good side now.”
Antonio was used sparingly during his first few months at West Ham, with Bilic seemingly preferring other options.
However, after injuries struck, the summer recruit was handed a run of games and he has grasped his opportunity with both hands.
Antonio has now played 23 times for the Hammers, and he has scored on seven occasions.
The rapid wide-man has played at right-back and right-midfield throughout the campaign, and he has always impressed.
Antonio’s next appearance for the Hammers is likely to come after the international break, when Bilic’s men take on Crystal Palace at Upton Park.
