It seems a lifetime time ago when there was a distinct lack of top-class English strikers. Harry Kane has been excellent again this season while Jamie Vardy has proved the step up from non-league football to the Premier League is possible. It is Vardy who another young striking sensation will be looking to emulate.
His former Brentford team-mate Harlee Dean suggested he should be in contention to play for England. Before the two clubs met in January, Dean raved about the Burnley hitman.
Speaking to getwestlondon.com he went on to say how highly he rates Gray.
“I think he could go on and play for England one day. If he finishes top scorer this season why wouldn’t teams be looking at him?
"Or Burnley could go up themselves. He’s got every attribute, so why not? That’s why he’s got such a big price tag.”
Andre Gray has been in irresistible form this season. 20 goals in 33 games has seen his Burnley side rocket to the top of the Championship, four points clear of nearest rivals - Brighton.
His speed and deadly finishing will surely see a clamour for his signature in the summer. There were rumours of Premier leagues clubs interest in Gray in January, with Swansea apparently pondering a £12 million bid, but Sean Dyche was not worried about losing his star man.
Gray had already played two games for Brentford at the start of the campaign. This meant he could be registered for another club, but not represent his potential new team until the 2016/17 season began. Relief at Turf Moor, for another six months at least.
There are a handful of clubs in the Premier League that would pay a lot of money to secure Gray's services. Teams such as Crystal Palace are crying out for someone who can find the net on a regular basis, and the Burnley man would fit the bill.
Even if Burnley do stay on track and gain promotion to the Premier League, their will be no shortage of suitors for Gray's signature.
Either way, it is highly likely he will be plying his trade on the highest stage in England. Not bad for someone who was playing non-league football just two years ago.
