Tottenham fans debate why Tom Carroll is still getting chances for the club

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder came off the bench at the weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 victory against Bournemouth on Sunday means Mauricio Pochettino’s side head into the international break five points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City with seven matches remaining.

Two goals from Harry Kane and one from Christian Eriksen gave Spurs a comfortable win against the Cherries at the weekend, allowing Pochettino to make some second-half changes with Tom Carroll coming on for his 29th appearance in all competitions this season.

Carroll has had to make do with a bit-part role for the majority of the campaign, but some Tottenham fans are clearly confused as to his presence in the squad if recent comments on HITC are anything to go by.

The 23-year-old is out of contract this summer, and given the quality of Tottenham’s squad right now it will be interesting to see where Carroll is playing his football in the next campaign and beyond.

Below is a selection of comments our readers have recently made regarding Carroll:

Bri Cooper said: ‘Great performance, Kane, Walker and Eriksen especially. What the **** is this thing with Pochettino and Carroll; can anyone please enlighten me?’

Davis said: ‘I can only think Poch feels that there is real potential there and giving him playing time is the way to develop it. In Poch I trust!’

Drew said: ‘I agree I don't really get why he brings Carroll on. He didn't bring much to the team when he came on. I also think he should only play cam positon as he has no physical presence. Same thing he done with Mason against Arsenal! I don't get it.’

Hutchi said: ‘To be brutally honest, I think it's the doings of Levy. Think about this, every young player and senior player that Poch likes he's tied them to a new contract. Carroll is the only player not to get a new contract, yet he's always featuring and gets minutes? Levy is looking for a buyer as Carroll's contract ends this summer. Look for Carroll to either sign a new contract at end of season then get loaned out with a view to buy from a midtable club. Either that or he'll sign a pre contract and Levy gets a sign-on fee. I refuse to believe that Poch could rate Carroll after the countless times he gets bullied by the opposition in matches, the Everton and Dortmund games stand out for me. Don't get me wrong he's a decent passer and technically gifted but he requires too much support and cover. Safest place to play him is behind the striker because he's too much of a risk in front of the back four. Saying that Eriksen, Lamela and Alli are miles ahead of him, so there's no room for him in the team.’
