Yaya Toure has withdrawn from the Ivory Coast squad after a suspected recurrence of a heel injury in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Manchester City playmaker Yaya Toure has delayed his international comeback after withdrawing from the Ivory Coast squad for this month's African Nations Cup qualifiers with a heel injury.

According to the Daily Mail, the 32-year-old suffered a recurrence of the problem during City's 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, having previously sat out the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool and the goalless draw at Norwich.

Ivorian officials confirmed Toure's withdrawal on Tuesday, with the midfielder having not played for his country since their Nations Cup success in February last year.

The news will come as a blow to the Elephants captain, who reportedly considered retiring from international football last summer, before answering the call for Friday's match against Sudan in Abidjan and the return game in Khartoum next Tuesday.

The 2017 finals in Gabon are just one of the key priorities for Ivory Coast coach Michel Dussuye, who recently suggested Toure is already eyeing an appearance at his fourth successive World Cup in Russia a year later.

Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini will hope to have the former Barcelona star back as soon as possible, in order to help his side's push for Champions League qualification.
