The Sunderland defender got his second taste of the fierce derby at the weekend.
The Black Cats and Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw at the weekend with both sides fighting for their Premier League future, and Yedlin – who is on loan at the Stadium of Light from Tottenham Hotspur – named the international game he felt matched the intensity of the local derby.
Yedlin experienced his first such clash at St James’ Park on Sunday and he later told the Gazette, “I loved it, it was a great atmosphere.
“Obviously the one at the Stadium of Light was good as well. USA v Mexico probably comes close to that atmosphere.”
Yedlin knows all about playing for his country, having earned 27 caps for the USA to date.
Back in October the 22-year-old played the whole match as Sunderland ran out 3-0 winners against Newcastle to maintain their superb recent record against them.
However, on Sunday Jermain Defoe’s opener was cancelled out late on by Aleksandar Mitrovic, leaving the two sides occupying two of the three relegation places with time running out.
Sunderland’s next match is against West Bromwich Albion directly after the international break.
