Report: Aston Villa open contract talks with Raul Meireles over summer switch

Raul Meireles Portugal

The Portuguese international is a free transfer in the summer.

Aston Villa may be in a state of turmoil, but it would appear they are getting their affairs ready off the pitch for next season.

Not only is there a massive overhaul in the management structure currently in full flow but the club are also set to replace Remi Garde as manager.

Also, according to reports in Turkey, they are working on bringing in a new player who has plenty of Premier League experience.

Objektif Bakis in Turkey is reporting that Villa have already opened contract talks with former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles over a potential return to English football.

The Portuguese international is out of contract at Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the summer and Villa, along with Sporting Lisbon are already in discussions regarding his Bosman transfer.

Villa however are likely to struggle convincing him of a move.

The mercurial midfielder, who has 73 caps for Portugal, is unlikely to relish the opportunity of playing in the Championship. Whilst Villa are not yet mathematically down, it would take a miracle for them to remain in the Premier League this season.

So the 33-year-old heading to Villa Park this summer seems a long shot.
