Newcastle quartet Townsend, Mitrovic, Aarons and Shelvey would take the Championship by storm next season

Newcastle United could be in the Championship next season but they have the players to make an immediate return

Newcastle United fans will be desperately hoping they avoid relegation this season, but with time running out the Magpies remain firmly in a scrap for their Premier League survival and the unthinkable could become reality in May.

Manager Rafa Benitez has been brought in to stave off that very prospect; however here we take a look at four Newcastle players who would take the Championship by storm if they do drop into the second tier next season.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Serbian international Aleksandar Mitrovic may not have scored the amount of goals many were hoping this season, but he has shown glimpses of his undeniable talent and a spell in the second tier could see him run riot.

The 21-year-old is a natural goal-scorer who has already found the net 75 times in 186 senior club appearances, so just imagine what he could do against Championship defences.

Rolando Aarons

This season has been a strange one for Newcastle winger Rolando Aarons, with injury robbing him of chances and former manager Steve McClaren thinking it was a good idea to try him as a full-back.

However, the 20-year-old has all the attributes required to succeed long-term at St James’ Park and he could be the creative catalyst to help fire Newcastle back into the top flight if the worst happens.

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend has only just arrived at Newcastle and while there will be other clubs interested in him if the Magpies do not avoid the drop he owes them a prolonged stay.

With his experience on the wing he could be one of Newcastle’s most important players in what will be a tough battle to earn promotion.

Jonjo Shelvey

While the likes of Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum may be sold if Newcastle are relegated, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey would be a vital cog in the side if they do not climb out of the bottom three between now and May.

With plenty of experience the England international could be the heartbeat of this Newcastle side for years to come.
