Newcastle United fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to have their say on the recent comments made by club owner Mike Ashley.

Ashley has told The Mirror that he regrets buying Newcastle, but he has made it clear that he will not leave even if the Magpies get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

“Do I regret getting into football?” the Englishman told The Mirror. “The answer is yes. I have had tonnes of fun in it but I haven’t been able to make the difference I wanted to in football like I have at Sports Direct."

“I have no choice,” said Ashley when asked if he was committed to Newcastle if the club go down. “They’ve got me, and I’ve got them. That is the way it is.”

Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs of England, but they are fighting for survival in the Premier League at the moment.

The Magpies are currently second from bottom in the league table with 25 points from 30 matches.

Last season, Newcastle narrowly avoided the drop from the Premier League, but this time there is a distinct possibility that they could go down.

Rafael Benitez has been brought in as a replacement for the sacked Steve McClaren, and the Spaniard has been entrusted with the task of keeping the Magpies up.
