Four chances created, 10 duels won: Liverpool's Adam Lallana steps up despite loss

Adam Lallana played well for Liverpool despite his team losing to his former club.

Liverpool suffered a surprise loss at Southampton which was more shocking in it's circumstances than the actual result, with the Saints in good form over the last three months.

The Reds let a two goal half-time lead slip to crash to a 3-2 loss, setting back their ambitions to mount a late push to claim a Champions League spot.

Former Saints stars Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana will have been particularly disappointed to end on the losing side, but Lallana especially can argue that he did himself justice.

The 27-year-old had a difficult first season at the Reds since his move to Anfield for a fee of £25 million, but he has shown a real improvement under Jurgen Klopp, with the highlight being his winner in the entertaining 5-4 win away to Norwich City.

Lallana created four opportunities, shouldering the creative burden with Roberto Firmino missing the game. Philippe Coutinho made one key pass by comparison, with Emre Can and Joe Allen nearest with two each.

In terms of a threat himself he did not attempt a shot at goal, with Southampton's initiative putting pressure on Liverpool's time in possession, but he was a driving force, making eight successful dribbles - the same as the rest of the team combined.

The loss will not be a fond memory for Lallana, but on an individual basis he continues to shine and grow into his role at the club, giving himself a chance of being kept on by Jurgen Klopp next season when the new manager is let loose in the transfer market in the summer.
