Former Norwich City and Celtic striker Chris Sutton suggested on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, March 21) that Newcastle United will get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.
The Englishman also criticised the clause in new manager Rafael Benitez’s contract which will allow him to leave Newcastle if he fails to keep them up.
“I don’t think that Newcastle have the character to stay up anyway,” said Sutton on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, March 21).
“That contact thing with Benitez, that's odd, isn’t it? That’s all in his favour. ‘If I don’t keep Newcastle up, then I am off’ and all this rubbish.”
Newcastle are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment, and many will agree with Sutton about their survival chances.
The Magpies have been underperforming throughout the season, and they simply cannot win games at the moment.
Benitez’s arrival has given the fans hope, though, and there have been positive signs in the last two matches.
After all, if Newcastle go down, then the club can try to find a better and more suitable manager for the Championship.
Having been in charge of big clubs like Liverpool, Inter Milan and Madrid, it makes no sense for Benitez to manage a team in the second tier of English football.
