Sheffield Wednesday's top 30 players - Number 10

HITC Sport's countdown of the Owls' greatest ever players continues with Redfern Froggatt.

Son of former Sheffield Wednesday captain Frank Froggatt, who led the Owls to promotion in the mid 1920s, young Redfern had sizeable shoes to fill.

Signed by Wednesday initially in 1942, it wasn't until three years later, following the culmination of World War II, that Froggatt Jr. was finally able to walk in his father's footsteps.

Operating predominantly as an inside forward, but occasionally as a more conventional winger, Froggatt made a fair first of the aforementioned shoe-filling.

After four seasons as a Second Division player, he not only repeated his father's trick of helping Wednesday to promotion, but top scored with 14 goals to boot.

However, Froggatt's taste of the top-flight was short-lived, with the Owls succumbing to relegation despite another 14-goal haul from the the forward.

By this point, the end of the 1950-51 campaign, Wednesday's yo-yoing between the top two tiers was entering full swing, but after another promotion the following season - this time as champions - Froggatt began to turn heads further afield from Hillsborough.

His cousin, Jack Froggatt, a Portsmouth player at the time, was already an established England international when Redfern won the first of his four international caps, from which he scored twice.

But with Wednesday failing to push on in the First Division and Froggatt now pushing 30, his Three Lions days stretched for merely a year.

Two more relegations and subsequent first-place finishes followed the Owls before Froggatt finally called time on his career at the end of the 1959-60 campaign, in which Harry Catterick's side had finished fifth, shortly before his 36th birthday.

Now when the name Froggatt is mentioned, it tends to be Redfern - not Frank.
