In fact, happiness of a close contact increases the chance of being happy by 15%. #InternationalDayofHappiness serves the purpose of helping people to learn practical ways to improve their wellbeing and make others around them happier too. The key message being, if you want to feel good, do good by helping others.
This day is coordinated by Action for Happiness who are a non-profit movement of people from 160 countries, and are supported by a partnership of like-minded organisations.
In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which recognised happiness to be a “fundamental human goal” to be given greater priority.
Our happiness is not set in stone, although our genes and upbringing influences about 50% of the variation in our personal happiness, our circumstances e.g. income and environment affect only about 10%. As much as 40% is accounted for by our daily activities and the conscious choices we make – which means that our actions really can make a difference.
