David Ginola has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT, which was broadcast on March 21st, that Rafael Benitez’s main problem at Newcastle United is that he has no strength in depth.
Newcastle are hoping that Benitez can be the man to save them from the drop, but Ginola does not believe that the Spanish manager has an easy task at St. James’ Park.
The former Magpies midfielder believes that Benitez has inherited a squad which is short of quality, and he fears that the players don’t have the mentality required to get out of trouble.
"That’s the problem for Benitez [they have no strength in depth]," the Frenchman said.
"You sign for the club and you know that you don’t have many games left to save the season. Obviously, you count on the players to react as positive as possible, but as a manager you can question people at Newcastle.
"It’s just amazing, you need have the players who can play in this position. When you have to play and fight every weekend it is a different game."
Benitez has been in charge of two Newcastle matches to date, but he is yet to celebrate victory.
The former Real Madrid boss first saw Newcastle beaten by Leicester City, before leading them to a 1-1 draw with Sunderland yesterday.
Newcastle’s performances have been marginally improved, but they desperately need to start collecting points more frequently.
The Tynesiders are currently in 19th place in the Premier League table, and they are three points adrift of safety.
