Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has suggested on Coral.co.uk that Tottenham Hotspur will be able to challenge for the Premier League title next season if they make a couple of signings in the summer transfer window.
The former Newcastle striker has also asked whether Tottenham would be able to keep hold of their top players and head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“I’ve mentioned the core of English players in this Tottenham team, when you add Lloris, Vertonghen, Alderweireld and maybe two more quality players to that, then they could be serious challengers once again next season,” Shearer wrote on Coral.co.uk.
“We know over the years that Spurs have sold their best players. The big question for Spurs is can they keep hold of them all and their manager?”
Even if Tottenham win the Premier League title this season, they will have to reinforce their squad in the summer transfer window.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool will all strengthen themselves ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
Over the years, Spurs have sold their best players, such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.
For the North London outfit to establish themselves a true force in the Premier League, club chairman Daniel Levy needs to hold onto the best players.
Tottenham also need to make sure that Mauricio Pochettino remains the head coach.
The former Southampton manager’s work at White Hart Lane has been remarkable, and he could be attracting interest from Premier League rivals and perhaps from mainland Europe.
