Indeed, the Reds were 2-0 up at half-time at St Mary's but a couple of game-changers swung momentum in Southampton's favour.
One of them was Martin Skrtel... The Liverpool centre-back was just awful after coming on, contributing mistakes during all three goals and even giving away a penalty on top of that.
But Sadio Mane, James Ward-Prowse and Victor Wanyama were also lauded for their definitive impact on the South Coast on Sunday.
Indeed, Wanyama in particular was praised by Southampton fans on Twitter, with the midfielder showing just what he can do in a Saints shirt. Those pardoning him for all his mistakes this season are perhaps going overboard - the 24-year-old has been criticised for good reason at times this term.
Against Liverpool, however, Wanyama was brilliant, with supporters giving him due credit on social media...
That middle two of JWP & Wanyama worked so well today, both playing like we know they can! #saintsfc— Chris Lowth (@LowthChris) March 20, 2016
Wanyama should start every match, as much at it pains me to say... 4 points off Champions League now... Wooooooooooooo #saintsfc— senDAN Kagura (@my_nameis_dan) March 20, 2016
The best moment was Wanyama going past every player on the pitch and taking the ball to the corner. #saintsfc— Ryan Wallace (@Ryn_Bru) March 20, 2016
Wanyama and mane were class (apart from the penalty) when they came on. Showed commitment. Hunger and they were focused. Good #saintsfc— Max griffin (@maxlee_griffin) March 20, 2016
Where's all the Wanyama & Mane haters? The guy was immense & he's what we've missed. Mane was lethal.Thankfully they're back. #SaintsFC— Saints DSA (@saintsdsa) March 20, 2016
