12 duels won, seven ball recoveries: Virgil Van Dijk stars in Southampton win over Liverpool

Southampton Football Club

The Dutch defender was impressive despite his side conceding two goals in the game.

Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk was in fine form at St Marys as his side beat Liverpool 3-2 this weekend.

It had looked likely to be a disappointing afternoon for the Saints as goals from Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge gave the away side a two nil lead.

A fantastic second half from Ronald Koeman’s side saw them battle back to secure all three points though, as they took advantage of some poor defending from Liverpool to win the game.

One man who enjoyed a fine game was defender Virgil Van Dijk who, despite conceding two goals, was impressive throughout.

In total he posted 55 touches, with just one of those proving to be unsuccessful.

He also won two tackles, six interceptions and seven ball recoveries, the most of any defender in the game, as well as one block.

In duels he similarly came out on top, posting 12 duels won and 10 aerial duels won in another impressive display since his move from Celtic in the summer.
