Alan Shearer agrees with Souness... says Andros Townsend went to sleep

The Newcastle legend was discussing the winger's performance against Sunderland.

Alan Shearer echoed the thoughts of Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher when it came to Andros Townsend's performance for Newcastle United against Sunderland, according to the BBC's Match of the Day 2.

While there were no qualms in particular about the winger's performance going forward, the £12 million signing (fee as reported by BBC Sport) was criticised by Souness and Carragher for switching off during Sunderland's goal.

And Shearer said the exact same thing, almost word for word.

The Newcastle legend told MOTD2: "Townsend’s gone to sleep [for the goal], they [Newcastle] switched off."

Clearly, then, set-pieces are an issue for Rafael Benitez to work on during Newcastle's all-important run-in.

Naturally, the Spaniard will have already focused heavily on them during training. As was shown against Sunderland, though, Newcastle's players are either not listening (again) or Benitez isn't working hard enough on set-piece drills.

The Magpies will need better against Norwich City next time out, meaning the Spaniard must get the players focused during the international break. That period of training could decide which of Sunderland, Newcastle or Norwich go down.
