Video: Ronald Koeman has his say on the best free-kicks in Premier League history

Ronald Koeman

Mentions for Manchester United, Southampton and Liverpool as Saints boss Ronald Koeman chooses his top three Premier League free-kicks.

After West Ham United star Dimitri Payet's blockbuster free-kick against Manchester United in the FA Cup at the weekend, the subject has been very much on the agenda this week.

And there are few players in football better placed to discuss what makes a great free-kick than Dutch maestro Koeman.

The legendary centre back scored an astonishing 207 goals for club and country throughout a glittering career.

England fans know only too well of Koeman's free-kick prowess after his nonchalant effort all but ended the Three Lions' hopes of qualification for the USA World Cup back in 1993.

But now the Saints boss, who has led his side to seventh in the Premier League table this season with eight games remaining, has been running the rule over some of the greatest free-kick goals scored in the English top flight.

Appearing as a guest on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Koeman chose his top three.

3) Ronaldo for Manchester United vs Portsmouth 2008

"It wasn't easy but (in third place) I choose Ronaldo," Koeman told MNF.

"Because hitting a ball like this is so difficult. It's a little bit like that the last few years that players like to shoot in this way and it is a great free-kick."

2) Matt Le Tissier for Southampton vs Wimbledon 1994

It was put to Koeman that the most legendary player in the history of the club he manages wouldn't be happy to see himself in at number two on his list.

"Sorry Matt," Koeman said.

"It's a great free-kick because he lifts the ball by himself and so good on the control, but sorry there is even one better than yours."

1) John Arne Riise for Liverpool vs Manchester United 2001

"The free-kick of Riise for Liverpool (is the winner) because it's such a fantastic strike," Koeman added.

The Dutchman agreed it bears similarities to some of his trademark free-kicks adding: "He was one of the players (who can hit free-kicks like that) and if you are playing (against) Riise you have to know that. A great strike."

And the best free-kick taker Koeman has ever seen?

Well that honour goes to Brazilian star Juninho of Lyon fame.

The brilliant dead ball specialist scored a remarkable 75 goals from free-kicks throughout his career, the best of which can be seen in the video below.
