Aston Villa player ratings v Swansea: Brad Guzan's gaffe proves costly

The American goalkeeper's error allowed Federico Fernandez to score eight minutes after the break as Remi Garde's slipped closer to relegation with a 1-0 defeat.

Brad Guzan 5/10 – Committed a goal-gifting error on one of the rare moments he was challenged, failing to claim Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick which Fernandez promptly bundled home. That said, he didn’t have much help from his defence.

Alan Hutton 6/10 – Industrious as usual but lost his man on the goal and failed to deliver a decent cross all game.

Ciaran Clark 7/10 – Solid at the back but missed a couple of good headed chances in the first half. Still, he looked better than Jores Okore has over recent weeks.

Joleon Lescott 6/10 – Played everyone onside for the goal, nullifying an otherwise decent display. Has done little to demonstrate he's captain material either, despite his vast experience.

Aly Cissokho 5/10 – Crossing was woeful once again and was fortunate not to be sent off for a second bookable offence after a poor challenge on Modou Barrow.

Ashley Westwood 6/10 – Worked hard but had little production to show for it. The criticism of his performances can be over the top sometimes, but it’s also clear that he’s not offering enough at the moment.

Idrissa Gana 7/10 – Too carless in possession at times but put up more impressive defensive statistics, recording five tackles and a match-leading 11 interceptions. At this rate, he’s bound to have a fair few suitors in the summer.

Carles Gil 6/10 – Started brightly but wasn’t decisive enough and steadily drifting out of the game after the break. There’s talent there but it’s not going to thrive in this dire situation.

Jordan Veretout 6/10 – Neat on the ball but suffered from much the same problem as Gil.

Jordan Ayew 6/10 – Wasted a great chance inside the opening 10 minutes, and while he had some bright moments, his effectiveness seemed somewhat lifted out on the left wing.

Rudy Gestede 6.5/10 – Didn’t get great service but made himself a nuisance with his size and strength. Should at least be useful back in the Championship.

Andre Green (Veretout 61) 6.5/10 – After last weekend’s debut, the teenage winger had another impressive cameo off the bench.

Gabby Agbonlahor (Gil 73) 6/10 – Touched the football just five times.
