Andros Townsend makes frank admission about how players reacted to McClaren sacking

The Newcastle winger has been discussing the mood in the camp after the head coach was sacked.

Newcastle United January signing Andros Townsend has been frank in admitting the squad were not surprised when Steve McClaren was sacked, according to the Daily Mirror.

Indeed, the Magpies were told of the move by text and were 'all expecting it.'

The winger had earlier admitted he felt like he had let McClaren down but, when the axe fell, the players simply carried on as normal.

Townsend is quoted as saying by the Mirror: "We all got a text last Friday. We were all expecting it. I have been in the game long enough to see managers come and go."

Newcastle will be hoping new boss Rafael Benitez gives them the surge of energy they crave during the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.

But it's Norwich City who seem to have had a second coming despite sticking to their original manager.

Alex Neil guided his side to a 0-0 draw against Manchester City last weekend - before beating West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Suddenly, the Canaries are outside the relegation zone. That leaves Sunderland and Newcastle in big trouble...
