Sunderland youngster George Smith has agreed a loan deal to join League Two side Carlisle United, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Smith is highly regarded within the corridots of power at the Stadium of Light after coming through the ranks on Wearside.
The 20-year-old has yet to make his first-team debut for Sunderland, but he has previously been an unused substitute for the first team.
Smith had a spell out on loan at National League Premier Division outfit Gateshead earlier this season, but his opportunities were limited during his month at the club, as he was able to make just one appearance.
The central midfielder has been a regular in Sunderland's Under-21s this season and a number of clubs have expressed an interest in taking him on loan.
However, Carlisle have moved quickly to agree a deal with Sunderland to bring Smith to Brunton Park for the rest of the season.
Carlisle are currently in 10th spot in League Two, four points outside the play-offs, and Cumbrians boss Keith Curle sees Smith as a key addition to his plans as they look to mount a late charge for promotion.
