The duo were given a difficult night at the Nou Camp by Barcelona's front three in midweek.
The two defenders were played together against Barcelona this week, in what was a tough evening for them against arguably the world’s most dangerous front three.
It is not the first time the Gunners defence have come in for criticism this season, with many believing the still need a world class centre back in the team.
Indeed, that was arguably demonstrated in the Nou Camp as Messi, Suarez and Neymar enjoyed themselves throughout.
Keown though was encouraged by the display and believes the more Gabriel and Koscielny play together then the better they will become.
“I just think the defensive line need to work together on when to drop back,” he told the Daily Mail.
“I think the longer Gabriel and Koscielny play together, though, things can improve.”
“They’ve both got good pace but when they drop off it makes things harder for the full backs as they have to track back. But with a bit of adjustment with the centre halves, they can get better.”
If Gabriel and Koscielny are given the chance to play more often together however, remains to be seen.
The Brazilian has hardly impressed when given the chance this season, with Per Mertesacker having been the first choice alongside the Frenchman for much of the campaign.
The German is something of a favourite of Wenger’s and is likely to remain that way for some time, unless of course he moves for that world-class centre half in the summer.
