James Milner filled in at left-back for Liverpool against Manchester United.

James Milner enhanced his reputation last night by filling in for Liverpool at left-back against Manchester United.

Picking a midfielder to play at full-back would normally be a risky move, even if Liverpool had little option after Alberto Moreno's injury.

With James Milner, the opposite is true. Milner is as safe a selection as they come, even out of position.

The former Manchester City ace won four tackles, twice as many as regular full-back Nathaniel Clyne, also matching the right-back's two interceptions.

He made 35 passes, exactly twice as many as Clyne's 15, although none of his five crosses found their desired target.

Jurgen Klopp could have selected youngster Brad Smith, who has done well this season when called upon, but Milner's big game experience proved vital.

The 30-year-old is not likely to change his game and suddenly become a flashy player, but these characteristics help him when it comes to playing in a more defensive role.

Here is a look at how Liverpool fans reacted to his performance...
