Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been quoted as saying by the club's official Twitter page that he had no doubts over Dejan Lovren’s ability after watching him perform against his then Borussia Dortmund side in a pre-season friendly.
The former Southampton defender struggled for form under former boss Brendan Rodgers, prompting many supporters and Premier League observers to criticise the club’s decision to sign him.
However, in recent weeks, Lovren has started to rediscover his best form for the Reds, with Klopp admitting that the defender wasn’t in the best shape when they first started working together earlier in the campaign.
“I heard before I came here and I saw in his eyes when I came here that he was not in the best situation,” Klopp has been quoted as saying by the club's official Twitter page.
“I had only one game in my mind. Liverpool against Borussia Dortmund, the friendly. I think it was his first game for Liverpool, and he was outstanding in this game. So I was pretty positive. Now everybody can see what he is capable of.”
Lovren has come back into the side due to the absence of Martin Skrtel through injury, and he has shown glimpses of why Liverpool opted to sign him from Southampton in the summer of 2014.
In his last four outings, the Reds have won three - including a 3-0 win over Manchester City - and drawn the other with his latest display helping his side eliminate Manchester United from the Europe League.
It will be interesting to see whether Klopp sticks with the Lovren-Sakho partnership which has wielded good results of late now that Skrtel has returned from a lengthy spell on the side-lines with injury.
