The Swede has recently gone into management in Sweden.
Villa have lacked character this season and how the fans of the club would love to have Olof Mellberg in the heart of their defence at the moment.
The Swedish star is still revered as a cult icon at Villa and would have certainly not stood for some of the poor performances from this team so far in 2015-16.
Gary McAllister has been speaking to Swedish source Expressen this week, and the subject of Mellberg came up. The former Aston Villa coach, who even had a spell as caretaker manager, believes Mellbergh would be the perfect player to guide Villa in the Championship next season:
"He is the great personality they need someone who is equally loved by the fans like he still is.
"The type of player they would need in the Championship next season to give some security and stability. He is a natural leader."
However Mellberg is now 38-years-old and retired from playing in 2014. He recently got his first manager's gig with Brommapojkarna and McAllister feels Mellberg has the qualities to be a star coach, and potentially return to Villa one day:
"But Aston Villa are perhaps to big a club now, so early in his coaching career, but without knowing his personality, he had a personality on the pitch that fits very well when you go into coaching role.
"He can read the game, bring his ideas and fire on a group of players."
Mellberg, who played 260 times for Villa in seven years, would be a popular returning figure to Villa - if he can prove his managerial talents in his homeland.
So keep an eye on the former Villa hero in the years to come.
