Liverpool progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night after they secured a 1-1 draw away at Manchester United.
Trailing by a 2-0 deficit heading into the second leg, United needed to avoid any early slip-ups against their fierce rivals and they managed to get through the opening 30 minutes without conceding the away goal that would put the tie out of their reach.
However, their joy would be short-lived after Philippe Coutinho netted a sublime equaliser for the Merseyside giants, cutting inside and gliding past Guillermo Varela before dinking a shot inside David de Gea's near post.
The Brazilian's strike meant that United required three goals after the restart to give them a chance of remaining in the competition, but they could not break down a sturdy Liverpool defence, led superbly by Mamadou Sakho.
The result leaves Jurgen Klopp with an opportunity to earn silverware in his first campaign at Anfield, while Louis van Gaal must hope that his team can get past West Ham in their FA Cup replay after the international break.
