Tottenham were always going to be up against it to overturn a 3-0 first leg defeat against Borussia Dortmund.
They had hoped to at least win the home leg against the German side, but did not manage to do that, losing 2-1 at White Hart Lane.
Star striker Harry Kane was left on the bench for the fixture, with Nacer Chadli asked to play up front in his place.
It did not work out well, not up against German international defender Mats Hummels, who helped ensure the Belgian made minimal impact.
Chadli has been in and out of the side this season, and his lack of rhythm showed as he turned in a disjointed performance.
He had only one shot at goal, which landed off target, and struggled to link up with his teammates effectively. He made five unsuccessful touches - four more than his nearest teammate.
The game served to highlight how important Harry Kane is to Tottenham up front, and how perhaps with investment in the transfer market in January, they could have taken the game to Dortmund more effectively.
Chadli may yet have a key role to play in the Premier League title race, and has a habit of popping up with a goal when it is needed, but yesterday evening was not his night.
Here is a look at how Tottenham fans reacted to the 26-year-old's performance...
Chadli had the worst game ever it's like he had one eye on the bench for Sunday, Kmt— Jermaine King (@DJ_Strika) March 17, 2016
I just don't think that either chadli or son can fill that role of back up striker to Harry Kane. Neither have the box awareness— Lionel Hutz (@Heressss_Alex) March 17, 2016
Chadli is worse than son when he starts. Chadli is an impact sub and should stay that way.— Josh Horsley (@joshuathfc_) March 17, 2016
Chadli is so Slow he goes Back in Time.— BYANYMEANSNECESSARY (@1LaneOnly) March 17, 2016
Mason and Chadli showed today they are not good enough. Always had them as squad players who could fill in. But now need to be sold— Daniel Prince (@DanPrince1975) March 17, 2016
Don't think Chadli can cut it in the Champions League based on tonight's performance, defended him a lot before but can't anymore sorry #COYS— Harry Charalambous (@PrimeSpur1992) March 17, 2016
Chadli needs to stick to coming off the bench and scoring a cracker and not doing anything else. You can't ask any more of him, bless him— Duncan (@duncan_19) March 17, 2016
Chadli shocking again but that's not a surprise— George. (@GeorgeeFozzy) March 17, 2016
