Terry McDermott makes his feelings clear about Rafa Benitez's Newcastle appointment

The former Newcastle player and assistant has told fans to forget all about the infamous 'facts' rant.

Terry McDermott feels Rafael Benitez's 'surgical precision' is perfect for Newcastle United right now, according to the Daily Star.

And the former Newcastle man also believes supporters should forget all about the Spaniard's infamous 'facts' rant during his time at Liverpool, as it in no way reflects what he'll bring to the table at St James' Park.

McDermott told the Star: "Every manager brings something different to the table and what impresses me most about Rafa is how he tackles every game with surgical precision.

"Everyone can remember his ‘Fact, fact fact’ rant against Fergie during his Liverpool days but that was the exception rather than the rule.

"Most of the time, he brings a sense of calm to potentially explosive situations and that’s just what’s required at Newcastle now."

Of course, possibly the best characteristic Benitez has to offer the Magpies right now is his discipline.

Steve McClaren is famed for being very close to his players - a friend to them - and his awful lack of discipline has therefore been clear to see at most of his jobs. His Newcastle spell was one of the biggest cases in point.

Benitez distances himself from his players and it's hard to imagine the same lack of effort - which has been criminal from a footballing point of view - going unpunished under the Spaniard.

He'll relish facing Sam Allardyce and Sunderland, although the Black Cats generally relish facing Newcastle, too...
