Drinkwater ahead of Henderson and Milner for England, says Danny Murphy

The Leicester City midfielder has been called up alongside the Liverpool duo.

Danny Drinkwater would be ahead of Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and James Milner in Danny Murphy’s England team, he has told talkSPORT.

The Leicester City midfielder has been in fine form this season, playing a key role in his side’s surprise rise to the top of the Premier League table.

There has been a huge swell in public backing for the midfielder as a result, with many believing he is thoroughly deserving of a place in England’s squad.

Manager Roy Hodgson answered that call as he called up the Foxes star for the Three Lions’ upcoming international friendlies.

He is in there alongside Liverpool duo Henderson and Milner, and as far as Murphy is concerned he should be starting ahead of them in England’s midfield.

“Danny Drinkwater thoroughly deserves that place in the midfield. He’s been tremendous,” he told talkSPORT.

“He possesses a little bit of everything. He is strong; he is positionally very good and tactically aware. He can see a pass too. His range of passing is very, very good.

“If you look at Henderson and Milner, none of them have played as well or consistently as him. I’d have Drinkwater ahead of those two at the moment, although Jordan and James have much more experience.”

It will now be interesting to see if Drinkwater is handed his chance to impress by Hodgson in these two games.

There would be little point to having him in the squad and not testing him, and these games provide the England boss with the perfect opportunity to do just that.

If he does so, and impresses, there is no denying he represents fierce competition to both those players’ international chances.
