Legendary England centre-back Terry Butcher gives his backing to under-fire Everton star John Stones

The England defender is currently out of the Everton starting XI.

It has not been an easy ride for Everton defender John Stones this season.

After a summer of doubt regarding his future, as Chelsea loomed, he remained at Everton and started the season in great form.

But injury worries soon crept in, as did errors in his game. His failure to spot danger and sometimes over confident play at the back saw him in trouble on many occasions.

Currently he is out of the Everton starting XI, with England team-mate Phil Jagielka and Argentine star Ramiro Funes Mori the preferred starting pair.

But he remains in the England team and one legendary England centre-half is still backing him for his country.

Terry Butcher, who captained the side and played 77 times for England, told Sky Sports News HQ today (17/03/2016):

"I think he has tried to overplay at times and he has been caught quite dramatically as well.

"I think international football suits him better. Teams don't go up high and press. In the Premier League now teams are pressing really high all the time. That's put him under pressure.

"He's very comfortable on the ball. I want Stones and (Chris) Smalling."

Stones is undoubtedly a top talent but his lackadaisical manner has seen him on the sharp end of criticism this season.

He will hope for some football with England this month to showcase once again what a special young talent he truly is. Because, for now, he isn't getting a look in for Everton.
