Dougie Freedman: The real winner at Nottingham Forest

Despite his sacking, Dougie Freedman enhanced his reputation during his spell at the club.

Dougie Freedman is still a relatively inexperienced manager, yet his career so far has had plenty of ups and downs.

He was fired by Nottingham Forest last Sunday, but his spell with the club was good for his career.

While Forest are undergoing much soul searching and contemplation regarding their next move, Freedman actually enhanced his reputation during his time at the club.

This is in large part because it was so low prior to his appointment.

His gamble to leave Crystal Palace for Bolton failed to pay off, and fans of the Lancashire side still place some of the blame for his current predicament at his doorstep.

Forest took a chance on him, and he did not let them down.

Like his team, his spell at the club was not flashy, but nor was it permitted to be.

An embargo for each transfer window he worked at the club made his life difficult, and meant promotion was pretty much impossible, with Britt Assombalonga injured and Michail Antonio sold. Even complaints over the style of his football can be attributed to this.

These factors give Freedman an excuse for not succeeding, but he became a better manager in thanks to the challenges put in front of him.

If he had failed at Forest on a big budget, or even left them in the relegation zone with their embargoes, his reputation might not have recovered after his Bolton disaster, but as it is, it will surely not be too long until he is back in management, and more can be learned about just how good a manager he really is, or is not.
