Arsenal reportedly tracking Schalke defender Roman Neustadter

Could Arsenal bring another German player to the Emirates Stadium this summer?

According to a report from German newspaper Bild, Arsenal are tracking Schalke centre-back Roman Neustadter with a view to signing him on a free transfer this summer.

The 28-year-old is predominantly a defender, although he can also operate in midfield if required, and given the poor form of Arsenal centre-backs Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker this season it would be no surprise if manager Arsene Wenger strengthens that area as soon as possible.

Neustadter has played 153 times for Schalke to date, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists in the process, and he has been a regular alongside Liverpool-bound Joel Matip this season.

The alleged Arsenal target has also played for Mainz and Borussia Monchengladbach so he has plenty of experience; the question is could he transfer his good form in Germany to the Premier League?

Arsenal’s impressive campaign tailed off alarmingly in recent weeks, and after elimination from the FA Cup and the Champions League, and a slump in the Premier League, questions will be raised regarding this squad and who exactly should lead them going forward.

With two caps for Germany and a commanding presence in the box, Neustadter would be a fine addition to Arsenal's squad, with Gabriel likely to fall down the pecking order having struggled after a promising start.
